Vintage Silver Butterfly Button Necklace

A beautiful symbol of transformation and balance.

Another treasure from the National Button Convention (yes, that is a real thing, and yes, I go as often as I can). This one-of-a-kind vintage sandcast Navajo silver button was too good to leave behind, and I've made it into an everyday statement piece.

It was made the old way, using traditional Diné silversmithing: molten silver poured straight into a hand-carved sand mold. That is where it gets its wonderfully solid, sculptural bones.

The motif is an abstract butterfly, with four high-polished wings framed by hand-stamped fluted edges. Richly oxidized channels run through it, throwing the artisan patterning into high contrast so every stamped detail pops.

The cording is hand-crocheted with shimmering sterling silver beads; it goes from a coffee run to a dinner reservation without thinking. Fastens in back with one of my signature sterling silver On U hand-cast button closures.
